Gossard Lingerie

The growth of Gossard corresponds to the development of lingerie through the twentieth century, with the company accountable for many significant advances in the underwear business. By the late nineties, Gossard had acquired an international reputation for its worldwide marketing-with many of its lingerie items sold in forty-five countries.

Established in America in 1901, Gossard was a family business until H. W. Gossard travelled to Britain in 1921 and opened offices in London's Regent Street. Gossard, an accomplished corsetiere, revolutionised English foundationwear in the 1920s by pioneering front-fastening corsets, an immediate hit which led to a production factory in Leighton Buzzard in 1926, and now the company's headquarters for its worldwide business.

By the 1930s, Gossard had registered as a British company. Its underwear rapidly achieved a standing for innovation, design and comfort. It was Gossard who introduced the modern bra, and in addition a selection of corsets using the latest art silks and elastics to match the graceful dresses of the time.

Even though new products were restricted during the years of WWII (the machinists were used in the war effort to make parachutes and rubber dinghies), Gossard was prompt to see the potential of the new synthetic fabrics such as nylon and integrated them into the corsets and bras of the early fifties. Among these items were the first lightweight girdles, presenting unparalleled comfort to a generation of women who wanted underwear, in which they could at last move more freely.

Throughout the social and fashion changes of the sixties, Gossard produced lingerie which appealed to all ages of women, identifying their diverse desires and launching suitable bras and corsets accordingly. For the younger generation who were demanding better choice in underwear and lingerie, Gossard reacted with inventive designs and patterns and established a vibrant range of lingerie. When, in the 1970s, the bare look became fashionable, Gossard recognized a gap in the market for a bra, which implied nudity, yet gave moderate cover and support. Its highly successful "Glossies" collection incorporated seamless bras and delicate, almost imperceptible briefs.

The Power dressing of the late 1980s and the trend for lingerie as outerwear heralded Gossard's launch of the Ultrabra, along with a new generation of "cleavage" prominent products. The Ultrabra Smooth included a graduated, integral moulded cup for a hidden look under the current transparent styles, while the re-launched Glossies collection saw an innovative billboard advertising campaign which asked: "Who said a woman can't get pleasure from something soft?"
