Calvin Klein
Calvin Klein has always understood the greater ramifications of fashion; that it is not merely about clothing, but image, mood, lifestyle. Over the last 30 years that he has been in the business, Klein has managed to distill these same three elements -- image, mood, lifestyle -- into a single image, usually in an ad campaign: Brooke Shields purring that nothing gets between her and her Calvins; the unisex cool of his cK One gang, its Gen X apathy perfectly mirrored in Kate Moss.
His celebrated name has spread far and wide on the waistbands of boxers and briefs, but Klein got his start in the less torrid business of women's coats. Born in the Bronx, New York in 1942, Klein studied at the New York High School of Art and Design before enrolling in the Fashion Institute of Technology in 1962. He worked as a dressmaker, then went into the coat business in 1968 with friend Barry Schwartz, now CEO of Calvin Klein, Inc.
Klein quickly branched out into sportswear, and the rest, they say, is history. Minimalist, practical and color neutral, Klein's clothing garbs a constellation of Hollywood stars, from Gwyneth Paltrow and Winona Ryder to Uma Thurman and Michelle Pfeiffer. He received the Council of Fashion Designers of America award for best womenswear and menswear designer in 1993, and has won the prestigious Coty Award for Design numerous times. His commercial empire has expanded as quickly as his list of awards, and now includes Calvin Klein for Men and Women, cK Calvin Klein for Men and Women, underwear, footwear, watches, fragrances, eyewear -- the list goes on.....
Klein has also culled useful notoriety from the publicity surrounding his outré advertisements. First, there was the pre-pubescent Brooke. Then, the erotic "Obsession" ads with Kate Moss and Marky Mark pressed against a wall. An advertising campaign launched in 1995 for cK Calvin Klein Jeans was quickly retracted after accusations of child pornography were filed. In February '99, there was general uproar, led by New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, over a Times Square billboard showing semi-naked tots gambling in Calvin Klein's kids undies.
Though risqué publicity campaigns give the house edgy cachet and trend-setting status, wearable, mainstream clothing is what makes Calvin Klein the all-American designer -- and with his name emblazoned on everything from bedsheets to dishware, truly a household name.-Megan Graves
