PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS

Most fitting problems are easy to remedy and often result from the mismatch of cup and band size.

#1 PROBLEM :
  Bra rides up in back
SOLUTION :
Adjust hook and eye closure to tighten, loosen straps or try a smaller band size i.e. (36 to 34) some breasts may be too small for the current cup size, increase the cup size to accomodate the whole breast tissue

#2 PROBLEM :
  Band digs in
SOLUTION :
Order one band size larger(34 to 36) or opt for a bra with a wider band

#3 PROBLEM :
  Sides bulge
SOLUTION :
Order one band size larger(34 to 36) or choose a style that provides more cup coverage

#4 PROBLEM :
  Cups overflow
SOLUTION :
Order one cup size larger(C to D) or one band size larger(34 to 36)

#5 PROBLEM :
  Sore shoulders
SOLUTION :
Loosen straps or opt for a bra with wider or padded straps. A wider back with additional hooks will also help

#6 PROBLEM :
  Bustline sags
SOLUTION :
Shorten straps, avoid stretchy fabrics or choose a firmer support style with rigid wide straps and a fuller cup coverage

#7 PROBLEM :
  Underwires pinch or poke
SOLUTION :
Order one cup size larger(B to C), or try a non-underwire soft cup style

#8 PROBLEM :
  Straps slip
SOLUTION :
Tighten straps or opt for a bra with wider straps. Posture bras are an excellent alternative. Bras with partial rear elastic on the straps place constant light tension on the strap for non slippage.

The Value of an IDEAL BRA FITTER

For women who have experienced a mastectomy, an ideal bra fitter can be a lifesaver.
Training and experience provide mastectomy fitters with the expertise to recommend bras and prostheses that are comfortable and natural looking. Many women develop long term professional relationships with their fitters and consider them a member of the health care team.

Yearly assessments should be made by the fitter to keep the prosthesis wearer comfortable and looking her best. An initial fitting right after surgery, for example, would be handled differently from fitting someone who has worn a prosthesis for years.

The art and science of a post-mastectomy fitting has many components. The fitter will first assess the patient to evaluate what is needed, then put their art form to work.

The key points an Ideal Fitter observes includes:

Your Bra
A good fitter will measure you when you come in to make sure you are wearing the right size bra. The fit of the bra is extremely important in supporting the prosthesis and holding it snugly against the chest wall. Bras will last an average of 4 to 6 months before they need to be replaced. If the bra is too loose or stretched, the prosthesis will sag and feel much heavier. If the bra is too tight, the prosthesis will be visible and the band will be very uncomfortable. "The fit of the bra is extremely important in supporting the prosthesis and holding it snugly against the chest wall."

Your Posture
If the fitter notices your shoulders are a bit uneven, she may suggest a different prosthesis for you. Some women need a weighted prosthesis to keep their chest wall muscles from contracting and pulling the shoulder out of symmetry. The fitter will work with your physician to help keep you in perfect comfort and alignment.

Your Prosthesis
A good fitter will assess the symmetry of your current prosthesis when you come for a fitting. As women age, their breasts go through a process called involution, where the breast tissue becomes more fatty and less glandular. The breast takes on a more naturally draped appearance. The fitter can recommend a prosthesis that can recreate the density of varying types of breast tissue. Women who experience weight change will notice that their prosthesis no longer matches their natural breast. The fitter will make suggestions for other sizes and can try other styles to create more symmetry. A good fitter will be knowledgeable about the latest breast prosthetic technology available and will keep her patients up to date.
